There are several topical treatments you may be prescribed.
- Topical retinoids, is a medicines which is based on vitamin A. It is apply (rubbed) to the skin twice a day. It works by encouraging the outer layer of the skin to flake off. The downside to this treatment is it may cause irritation and it makes the skin hypersensitive to sunlight.
- Azelaic acid, is an alternative to benzoyl peroxide, This may cause less skin soreness.
- Another form is topical antibiotic lotion. This is applied to the skin and can be used to control the Propionobacterium acnes bacteria. This treatment needs to be on a continuous basis for at least six months.
