- Oral antibiotics (tablets) is usually prescribed for inflammatory acne and can be taken daily over a period of time. The antibiotics acts to kill off the bacteria infecting the skin. The downside to this treatment is that many strains of bacteria are often resistant to the common antibiotics and it could take up to 4 to 6 months before you can see improvements in your skin. Lots of people find that a prolonged course of antibiotics is a nuisance. As a result many people do not always complete the course.
- Hormone treatment is also a common form of treatment for women would have acne problems. A standard combined oral contraceptive pill (containing an oestrogen and a progestogen) can improve acne symptoms. Please note that in some women, it can also make symptoms worse.
